The event focuses on best wood burning practices from burning dry seasoned wood, to the importance of chimney sweeping, and new wood stove innovation. There are many other heating options that the district offers wood stove change out participants, such as pellet stoves, kerosene, propane, and electric mini split heat pumps.
"We're trying to reduce wood smoke emissions and believe with community cooperation and the grants available we can improve air quality in the greater Portola area," said Targeted Airshed Grant Specialist Mikki Brown. "We will also have woodshed applications, information about purple air monitors, and green waste programs offered by the district."
Joining NSAQMD in this years' workshop are several local and traveling professionals in the hearth and electric home heating industry who will offer attendees a wealth of knowledge and information. Residents who are looking to improve their existing habits, upgrade their home heating, or learn more about the added benefits to efficient home heating are encouraged to attend the event.
"We are very excited with the retailer, vendor, and industry experts who will be present to share their wealth of knowledge with our amazing community," Brown said.
Additionally, there will be representatives from Plumas County Fire Safe Council (PCFSC) who plan to introduce their HEPA Purifier Loan Program and to answer any questions about prescribed fire. "We are thrilled to have PCFSC join us to inform and educate the community about their activity with prescribed burns and local programs available to residents," Brown added with a smile.
Presentations will begin promptly at 11 a.m., with an event agenda to be provided for the public in the weeks leading up to the event. "Please join us at this educational family friendly event and enjoy a free lunch, coffee, treats, and a chance to win a raffle prize!" Brown invites. Everyone who signs the attendance sheet is automatically entered to win a gift card to Ace Hardware in Portola, with three gift cards to be raffled in a total of $500, and the first 25 residents to attend will receive a package of compressed wood logs.
Each prize winner for the entry raffle will receive a gift basket, with the third-place prize being a $100 Ace Hardware gift card, second place a $150 Ace Hardware gift card, and the first-place raffle winner to receive a $250 Ace hardware gift card. Winners must be present to receive their prize.
The District would like to encourage other agencies that focus on environmental and public health programs in our community to join in during this Earth Day event.
