Having survived several sweltering New York City summers without air conditioning, I consider myself to be a self-proclaimed fan expert. A fangirl, if you'd like (please laugh). Over the past eight years, I've collected at least twelve fans from different brands and I've only fallen deeply in love with one of them. Enter the Dyson Pure Cool TP04.

While my days of non-A/C life are behind me, being self-isolated in an apartment building in the middle of Brooklyn surrounded by neighbors who don't know how to cook and micro-particle-blowing construction sites around me, having a fan that could help improve my air quality was a must. Plus, it was especially important for me to have an air cleaner that had a proven track record.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air cleaners and HVAC filters can help reduce airborne contaminants, including viruses in a small space. And while these devices can't protect against exposure to viruses like the coronavirus, the filtration system was recommended by the Center for Disease Control to help protect people indoors.

After doing a hearty amount of research, I stumbled upon the Dyson Pure Cool, which senses and captures pollutants in the air, like pollen and other potentially toxic microparticles, before sending out purified air into your home. The machine is certified asthma and allergy-friendly and uses a 360 degree Activated Carbon filter and Glass HEPA filter to make sure the air around you is as clean as possible.

I tested the TP04 for over a month and it didn't take long for me to understand why this brand of fans is so beloved. While the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 is relatively expensive (it clocks in at just under $570), I've found comfort in knowing that the air I'm breathing in is as clean as possible. I've noticed that, especially when I cook (or our neighbors burn something and we smell it through our walls), the Dyson is quick to detect these microscopic particles that are affecting our air quality—for the first month, I left the fan on auto to really reap this technological benefit.

Post the 1-month trial, I am still very much obsessed with our new Dyson fan. I've since moved it from our living room into our bedroom and have a greater appreciation for the Dyson app, which allows you to control your fan wherever you are—and gives you a detailed explanation of the reading you're seeing on the fan display—and the night mode, which allows you to turn off the bright display on the fan itself.

Overall, having the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 has been a quarantine saving-grace. It's quiet, effective, and from one fangirl to the next, it makes summer inside a tiny one-bedroom apartment a little easier.
