One of the important components of your furnace system is its air filter.  The main purpose of the air filter is to protect the blower fan from the dust, hair, and other contaminants the return duct pulls into the HVAC system.  The air filter will also improve the quality of the air in your home as it keeps pollutants and allergens from being recirculated throughout the house.

As the filter does its job catching particulates and pollutants in the home, including mold, dust, pet dander and the like, the fine mesh of the filter can become more dense and may be on its way to eventually becoming clogged.  If the air filter isn't changed regularly, air can't pass through it as easily, which could cause your furnace to have to work too hard.  It could even malfunction if the filter becomes completely clogged.

Air filters should be changed, on average, every 90 days.  If you have pets or live in a high-pollen area, you should change it every 60 days.  Air filters are not expensive, especially considering how they help your HVAC system run efficiently and improve the quality of your indoor air.  The documentation that came with your furnace system will provide you with the necessary information to make sure you purchase filters that are the correct size and have the recommended minimum efficiency level for your HVAC system.

When changing your furnace's air filter, note the arrow on the side of the filter that designates the direction of the airflow.  The arrow should face the furnace side of the compartment that holds the filter when you are sliding it in.  The filter will work properly if it is inserted correctly.
